Curtis Dining Hall

Free holiday arts event for ALL Denison students, faculty, staff and families!
Join ETHEL and your Denison Family as we bring in the holidays with Phil Kline’s moving music meditation, “Unsilent Night.” We will gather at Curtis Dining Hall and walk the campus together, playing pre-recorded music from a chorus of our own cell phones.
What is Unsilent Night?
"Unsilent Night" is both a musical meditation and a fabulous stress release, a gorgeous and inspiring community event to warm hearts and calm minds during the stress of the season (and the end of the semester!).

Where and When?
We will meet at 7:15 pm on Thursday, November 29, outside Denison’s Curtis Dining Hall (rain or shine), and start walking the campus at 7:30 pm, ending around 8:30 pm at Swasey Chapel, where we will be greeted with hot beverages and cookies!

How Can I Participate?
You do not need to be a musician to join in the joy of bringing this beautiful holiday experience to campus! All you need is a mobile phone (if possible, paired with a Bluetooth speaker), warm clothes, and good walking shoes. (And for audio adventurers, there are several other participation options; check the links below!)

How It Works
Each participant gets one of four tracks of music in the form of a cassette, CD, or Mp3. Together all four tracks comprise "Unsilent Night." The fact that the participants play different "parts" simultaneously helps create the special sound of the piece. Participants carry cell phones, Bluetooth speakers, boomboxes, or anything that amplifies music, and simultaneously start playing the music. We then walk a route through campus, creating a unique mobile sound sculpture which is different from every listener's perspective.

How Do I Download the Music?

“A luminous soundscape played by the audience on boomboxes carried through city streets... since 1992. From New York to San Francisco and Brussels to Saskatoon.” And now, at Denison!
“Kline’s luminous, shimmering wash of bell tones is one of the loveliest communal new-music experiences you'll ever encounter, and it's never the same twice.” Time Out New York
“...immerses the listener in suspended wonderment, as if time itself had paused inside a string of jingle bells.” The New York Times
